It almost seems an oxymoronic term: a cruelty-free slaughterhouse. I was surprised to discover that currently there are no federal laws which require the USDA to inspect the farms in which slaughter animals are raised. And further that many states exempt farm animals raised for slaughter from falling under the anti-cruelty laws which protect our domestic animals.
This video was provided by an organization known as "Mercy For Animals". Yes, it's a group which promotes a vegetarian lifestyle. The video clocks in at a pretty long twelve minutes but I dare you to see the first few seconds of the employees throwing the baby pigs around like footballs and not feel something. Something besides the urge to make the obvious "tossing the pigskin" joke. I do realize that keeping animals and gestation crates and lobbing them from one place to another makes it easier or faster or whatever for business. But we're eating these sore-ridden and scabbed animals, which makes my heart sick from the abuse, and my stomach sick from the state of poor health those pigs seem to be in.
I had a hard time embedding the video,
so here's the link. I just realized that "slaughter" is one letter away from "laughter". Weird.
