  • Government, Get Out of My Bra

I am so glad that my breasts mean nothing to that government task force.  Recommending that women don't get mammograms before the age of fifty (50!!) is reckless endangerment bordering on depraved indifference to human life.  Both of my grandmothers had breast cancer.  I had a cousin who died at the age of 34 from breast cancer.  My mother and sister had breast cancer scares.  I feel as if I have ticking time bombs stuffed in my Cross Your Heart. But the government says, "Don't worry about it.  The benefits of screening between 40 and 49 are minimal, so nah-nah-nah-nah-naaaahhhh!"  This is a paraphrase of course, but not by much.  Here's the ill-advised advice.

As I said to Bricker59, it seems as if the government is trying to systematically lower the population.  I can't wait for government health care reform.  Way to go!

  • I May Never Eat Pig Again - Graphic

It almost seems an oxymoronic term: a cruelty-free slaughterhouse.  I was surprised to discover that currently there are no federal laws which require the USDA to inspect the farms in which slaughter animals are raised.  And further that many states exempt farm animals raised for slaughter from falling under the anti-cruelty laws which protect our domestic animals.

This video was provided by an organization known as "Mercy For Animals".  Yes, it's a group which promotes a vegetarian lifestyle.  The video clocks in at a pretty long twelve minutes but I dare you to see the first few seconds of the employees throwing the baby pigs around like footballs and not feel something.  Something besides the urge to make the obvious "tossing the pigskin" joke.  I do realize that keeping animals and gestation crates and lobbing them from one place to another makes it easier or faster or whatever for business.  But we're eating these sore-ridden and scabbed animals, which makes my heart sick from the abuse, and my stomach sick from the state of poor health those pigs seem to be in.

I had a hard time embedding the video, so here's the link.

I just realized that "slaughter" is one letter away from "laughter".  Weird.

  • Riding in Spaceships with Boys

So I watched the new Star Trek last night.  Tom, who was never a Trekkie and has probably never seen anything more than Trouble with Tribbles, brought it home.  Good man.  I love a good tete-a-tete between Bones and Kirk.  I had tried not to read the pre-press so I was absolutely delighted with it, especially when I found Simon Pegg playing Scottie.  Loved the running jokes referring to the original series.  I was even impressed with the guy who played Kirk.

The only problem I had was with Spock.  No, the actor was great.  Seriously.  Early on in the movie though, I had a vision of Ben Stiller as Spock.  And that ruined it.  Every time I saw Spock, I thought of Ben Stiller.

    I could totally see it.

  • Every year my family kicks off the Christmas season, not by writing lists of wants, but by giving to people in need.  Believe me, we get caught up in the other stuff soon enough.  Sunday night my daughter and I packed up a shoebox for one of those Christmas present charities (Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child) .  GabrielPeter wrote a fine blog on this charity yesterday explaining how to go about doing so.

As I filled the box to the brim with stickers and bouncy balls and a sad looking model horse Elise picked out to send to some little girl in need across the globe, I wonder if it's going back to the same child in China or Pakistan or Taiwan who made it for 47 cents a year.

    Just a ponder.

Hm. I see you around, but I don't see your footie prints. This makes me a sad gay. Which is really ironic when you think about it.

@TastyAnonymity - Thanks for checking in on me. I've been ridiculously difficult recently, mired down with my own "what's the meaning of it all?", but thinking of you fondly. [=
